The Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind upright vacuum (model UH71250) is getting fairly average reviews and ratings from owners. The vacuum is on the heavy side and some folks find it bulky and a bit of a chore to move and maneuver. Also, the power cord, while auto-retract, is a bit short which can be frustrating when cleaning a large area. On the plus side it does excel at picking up pet hair and is a relatively affordable vacuum cleaner. In addition it comes with a HEPA filter that includes a layer of carbon for odor elimination.

Probably the most difficult characteristic of this vacuum to nail down is the suction. Is it good or is it bad? Many owners report that the suction is very strong and that the machine has great pickup but there are also quite a few folks who report poor suction. It does not appear that this is simply people with different ideas of what good suction is, but rather that some machines are actually exhibiting less suction than others. Hoover suggests that machines with poor suction may be the result of dirty filters or perhaps clogs somewhere along the air path of the vacuum. The vacuum manual at the bottom of this article provides some instructions to possibly remedy this.

The combined cleaning reach of the wand and hose is reasonably good but the power cord is not particularly long. Many owners complain about having to unplug and replug the vacuum frequently. Having said that, the automatic rewind power cord is a feature owners love, and it is likely that the “shortish” power cord is the result of adding this feature.

Most owners agree that the vacuum performs admirably on pet hair - both on carpet and bare floors. The pet turbo tool also works well.

As the name suggests the “Whole House Rewind” is indeed capable of cleaning many areas of the home including carpets, bare floors, window sills, furniture, couches, ceiling fans, etc. Folks also seem pleased with the reasonably low cost of the vacuum – it can sometimes be found in the neighborhood of $120-130.

This upright is a bit on the heavy side however, (above average weight for an upright) and some folks find the unit bulky and hard to move around. Power up homebase charging pad user manual.

Brushroll & Height Controls
The Hoover UH71250 has a motorized brushroll with on/off controls (controlled via a foot pedal). This enables the vacuum to perform on both carpet and bare floors. Typically carpet is vacuumed with the brushroll ON (to loosen dust and debris and help pull it up) and bare floors are vacuumed with the brushroll OFF (ensures no scattering and also, in some cases, no scuffing of delicate flooring).

There are 5 different height settings available via a dial located on the top of the vacuum nozzle (see image below). These settings raise and lower the nozzle allowing it to be set to an effective cleaning height on different floor surfaces. Setting 1 is for hard floors and settings 2 through 5 are for carpet (2 for low pile carpet and 5 for the highest pile carpet).

Note: We notice that for carpet deeper than 1 inch Hoover recommends turning the brushroll OFF. This makes sense as with carpet this deep it may be possible for the brushroll to cause damage.

WindTunnel & Cyclonic Technology
This vacuum has what Hoover refers to as Windtunnel 2 technology. The company is somewhat vague about this particular technology but the 2 apparently stands for 2 channels of suction. They also indicate that normal WindTunnel Technology only has 1 channel of suction. We have also seen WindTunnel 3 Technology which, we can only assume, uses 3 channels of suction. Does this “technology” really help with cleaning ability? Well, in theory it makes some kind of sense to spread the suction more uniformly across the nozzle via multiple suction channels but we have yet to see or read of any real proof of better cleaning results.

The UH71250 is bagless and it uses something called cyclonic technology (in this case they call it multicyclonic technology as there are 2 cyclones). Cyclonic technology involves sending the incoming air through one or more cyclonic cylinders that spin the air very rapidly. As the air spins the dust and debris are forced out - via centrifugal force - and into the dust canister. Cyclonic technology helps to keep the filters cleaner longer and it provides no loss of suction as the dust canister fills (as opposed to many bagged vacuums where the suction can drop as the bag fills).

Filtration
The Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind has two filters. A pre-motor filter and a HEPA filter (post motor). The pre-motor filter is rinsable and, with normal household use, should probably be cleaned about every 2 months. The HEPA filter cannot be rinsed/washed so when the filter is dirty one should just tap out the dust and debris over a dustbin. Hoover reports that the HEPA filter is designed to last the warranty period of the vacuum (3 years) before it needs replacing. The HEPA filter also has a carbon layer which absorbs odors. This is a great feature in households with pets and even smokers.

Tools
The vacuum includes 3 tools:
- Pet Turbo Tool (this is a handtool with a small suction driven brushroll. It is useful for cleaning carpeted stairs, upholstery, mattresses, etc.)
- Crevice Tool (great for getting into tight areas, along edges and baseboards, etc.)
- Pivoting Dusting Tool (this has 5 cleaning positions and is useful for cleaning fans, light fixtures, some draperies, etc.)

These tools all store on-board the vacuum so they are quickly accessible when needed. They fit on the end of the vacuum wand (also in the tools image below) or the hose. We do notice that these are all compression fit however. This means they are attached by simply pushing them onto the hose or wand (no clicking together or buttons to release). Compression fit works but it is not as elegant a solution as “click fit” and it sometimes results in the tools falling off or getting stuck on.

Dust Canister, Weight, Warranty
The dust canister has a capacity of 1.29 liters and we have heard no complaints of having to empty it too frequently (meaning it is not too small). It is fairly straightforward to remove it from the vacuum, to empty it, and to reattach it to the vacuum. It is bottom release (which is typical).

Additional features include a 13.5 inch cleaning path (which is quite wide), 2 rear wheels, a thermal protector (that will shut the motor off should it get too hot), and a carry handle. There is also a “System Check Indicator” that will turn red to alert you of a possible problem such as a dirty filter or a clog. This appears to be an indicator that is triggered by reduced airflow and there are a few possible solutions in the manual (see bottom of review) should this occur.

This vacuum weighs in at 17 lbs which is a bit on the hefty side. We have seen some uprights that weigh 20-22 lbs so it isn’t a behemoth but there are also many at the 14-15 lb level. The Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind carries a 3 year limited warranty (for domestic use).
